domestic abuse

This University project focused on domestic abuse. I specifically wanted to dig into how this issue can be passed down through generations, and needs to be addressed to stop the cycle – even if it’s easier to sweep it under a rug.

The first poster has a raw and realistic visual style. Painting with watercolours, I created a bruised effect on the model’s face. I then digitally reversed the colours to produce an X-ray effect. However, I kept the bruised eye in its original colours, to emphasise and draw attention to the harsh reality of domestic abuse.

The second poster is designed in a more illustrative style, inspired by German expressionism. Visually, the image is intended to confront the viewer, with a direct, grungy style to underline the brutality of the issue.

The dark, bold style of these posters confronts and challenges the viewer about the reality of domestic abuse in New Zealand.
